As an experienced carpenter specializing in the restoration of 18th-century clerestory buildings in Virginia, I’ve encountered numerous challenges that arise from a general misunderstanding of these historical structures by untrained builders. Clerestory buildings, characterized by their high windows above eye level, were designed to provide natural light and ventilation, a concept often overlooked in modern architecture. This fundamental aspect of their design is frequently misunderstood, leading to improper renovations that compromise both the aesthetic and functional integrity of these historic buildings.

Clerestory windows illuminate many of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed interior spaces, especially the Usonian home designs, including the Zimmerman House and the Toufic Kalil Home. In addition to adding clerestory windows to residential structures, Wright also used rows of glass in more traditional settings, such as his Unity Temple, Annunciation Greek Orthodox, and the original library, the Buckner Building, on the campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland. For Wright, the clerestory ventana was a design choice that satisfied his aesthetic and philosophic ideals.

Clerestory windows have become a mainstay of modern residential architecture. From the 1922 Schindler Chace house designed by the Austrian-born R. M. Schindler to the student designs of the Solar Decathlon competition, this type of fenestration is a popular and practical choice.

Remember that this “new” way of design is centuries old. Look up at the great sacred places across the world. Heavenly light becomes part of the prayerful experience in synagogues, cathedrals, and mosques throughout the ages, from Byzantine to Gothic to Modern structures like architect Alvar Alto‘s 1978 Church of the Assumption of Mary in Riola di Vergato, Italy.

Another common issue is the mismanagement of the clerestory windows themselves. These windows are crucial for light and air circulation, yet I’ve seen many cases where they have been inappropriately sealed or replaced with glass that doesn’t match the period. Such alterations not only disrupt the building’s historical character but also its internal climate control, which was originally designed to rely on natural ventilation. It’s essential to use restoration techniques that maintain the original functionality of these windows while preserving their historical appearance.

In my work, I’ve seen many instances where untrained builders have attempted to “modernize” these structures without respecting their original design. For example, replacing original woodwork with modern materials not only detracts from the building’s historical authenticity but also affects its durability. The wood used in the 18th century was often old-growth timber, which is denser and more resistant to decay than most wood available today. Ignoring this, untrained builders often use less suitable materials, leading to a faster degradation of the structure.

Educating untrained builders about the historical and architectural significance of these structures is vital. Workshops and training programs on traditional carpentry methods and materials can bridge this knowledge gap. As someone deeply passionate about preserving our architectural heritage, I advocate for a collaborative approach where experienced craftsmen like myself work alongside newer builders. This not only ensures the structural and historical integrity of these clerestory buildings but also passes down valuable skills and knowledge to future generations of carpenters.

USING CLERESTORY IN HOME OR OFFICE DESIGNS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Daylighting and Sunshading

Natural daylight from the northern ventana wall illuminates the entire building without glare, substantially reducing what is usually an room’s most significant energy cost, electric lighting. Ideally, overhead overhead lights won’t be needed during the day. Also, an open office layout allows daylight to be distributed throughout the building, providing more efficient heating and cooling. Eaves are designed to provide shade of interior walls in the summer reducing cooling costs dramatically.

Using Natural Ventilation

To reduce the need for electricity, a building is situated to receive maximum southern exposure for warmth and to take advantage of prevailing winds for natural ventilation. Using the sun’s heat in the winter and natural ventilation during warm months, the heating and cooling systems are not needed approximately 15 percent of the year if the natural design principles can be followed.  Extreme examples of this design principle are found in the Earthship designs of Michael Reynolds in New Mexico successfully colling a building in the desert sun.

The Homestead Resort and Hot Springs were purchased by the Omni hotel group in 2013 and from October 2021 to October 2023, the entire resort underwent a complete renovation, costing over $150 million.  Gepetto supplied many of the historically accurate elements to the renovation contractors.

Carpintería de restaurante única

El restaurante Si fue un proyecto creativo del año 2007 donde la madera cobró vida en un espacio muy reducido. Equipar el pequeño espacio con mesas y sillas disponibles habría limitado gravemente la función y la rentabilidad del restaurante. El propietario se acercó a nosotros en busca de ayuda arquitectnica para construir un espacio con un ambiente cálido y confortable con un diseño fluido que permitiera a los camareros y camareras trabajar sin problemas. En el centro, en el diseño horizontal, el arquitecto diseñó una mesa en forma de riñón como una mesa alta que podría tener a grupos más grandes o cenas familiares, pero necesitaba la confianza en que podíamos hacer una estructura lo suficientemente fuerte y al mismo tiempo ahorrar espacio.  Mesas de altura estándar se alinean en la pared trasera y aumentamos la capacidad de asientos formando un banco en toda su longitud. Es difícil notarlo en estas fotos, pero el banco da la vuelta al borde con una madera contrachapada sólida y doblada que muestra la veta.

Tema de grano de madera

La veta de la madera natural aportó un tema unificado y ahorró costes. El florecimiento visual central en el centro incorpora el botellero. Agregar círculos grandes para contrastar todas las líneas rectas, además de confundir a la vista en cuanto al método de construcción, le dio al espacio un arco audaz y memorable. Dos reliquias de grano oscuro se sostienen creando tensión y misterio mientras deleitan la vista a medida que asciende. La mesa comunitaria se sostiene sobre patas sólidas torneadas a mano, mostrando un perfil de veta poco común pero ahorrando practicamente espacio en el piso para que el espacio pequeño parezca más grande. Toda la carpintería mostraba una textura de fibra final, lo que le daba a la mesa una apariencia distintiva, divergente de las mesas de restaurante tradicionales, algo insólito en 2007 y que está de moda ahora.

Because of the quantity of historic homes in Virginia we are often building for the historic market, but when a condo project comes along that is looking for a modern style that still presents as timeless and clasic – the builders coms to Gepetto.  We produced solid wood cabinets mounted with solid aluminum pipe and klee clamps. Rich matching and sturdy oal was used as stair treds, flooring, and open cabinetry to bring a theme to the whole space.

We’re here in Washington DC finishing up install cleanup at M street and 11 th for Supra Restaurant.  The restaurant’s beginning is an interesting story in innovation starting on Kickstarter and finished with quality craftsmanship from
Gepetto.  The inspiration of a foreign chef formerly with the Georgian embassy come together to form a restaurant titled “Supra” which was originally crowd funded on
Kickstarter by Laura and Jonathan the visionaries shepherding the vision into existence.

The textured interior design featuring so much rich wood grain on this project was Tom Mulhern at 2 Scales and his 20 plus years of experience designing for restaurant interiors brings to life creative circular square objects the sturdy timelessness of full grain hardwoods. Gepetto produced the CAD drawings into beautifully finished hardwood booths, tables, planters and service stations featured in the photo’s & video.

PREAPPROVED hand crafted details

To finish the fences in an historically authentic look and feel, Gepetto Craftsmen used hand cut templates emulating the mistakes a 1700’s carpenter might have made in the process of fashioning hundreds of newell posts.  The post tops are cut from solid pieces just like 200 years ago.  However, our craftsmen are accustomed to 21st century levels of detail and repeatability and work with some of the highest quality machine tools – to produce the same result craftsmen working with steel that had only been tempered by a blacksmith 200+ years ago.  The post tops were cut with varying templates to give a pre-approved – hand fashined look and feel allowing the museum historians as much input as possible in their final product.

The process: 1. Call Matthew, and talk through your needs (click to call) – good old fashioned customer service by a master craftsman.  Ask us about our proprietary laminate system for building enhanced engineered solid wood beams to last in the mid-atlantic humidity and heat.  Ask about the latest high efficiency and energy conserving coated glass technologies from Solar Eclipse when you specify them to prevent UV damage indoors and provide that energy efficient envelope saving you cooling costs.  Ask Matthew about anything else he would consider. 2. We will do a site visit to examine your rot or any structural problems that may be occuring (if applicable). With photos and measurements from your existing structure we take your rough sketch and make it into a “shop drawing” – which is a specific architectural drafting that accounts for the special assembly needs of wood. The shop drawing is drafted by our specifically trained engineering architect to account for the structural characteristics of responsible solid wood construction.  Your deposit accounts for the drawings, and purchase of the specific species of wood to build your puerta.

3. Your lumber hits the shop, and our experienced craftsmen guide your wood from rough hewn lumber into finely trued finished members.  It may appear to be an easy process, but the grain structure of the lumber can cause warping, curvature, and stress deformations over time if not accounted for.  A factory puerta does not account for the hidden shape of the wood used to build your puerta.  So if you’re finding that your brand new home’s puerta is no longer shutting in the first long humid stretch of the summer, well – that’s likely why.  A puerta in direct sunlight can hit surface temperatures over 200F which is enough to boil water and so the temperature gradient alone is enough to warp an internally unstable beam. 3. Experienced craftsmen will be out to install your puerta.  Finish carpentry only works in three dimensions and 3 cubed makes for a lot of variables that can trip up the inexperienced, so our craftsmen come out to handle it.
